Becoming Collegiate Academy: Jacksonville, Florida’s most recent authorized public-charter elementary school, is now accepting kindergarten and first grade applications for the 2022-2023 school year. Becoming will open its doors in the Fall of 2022 to kindergarten and first grade students only, and add one grade level each subsequent year, until it reaches full capacity at 5th grade, to follow an intentional scalable growth model. "I really hope that my child is admitted into Becoming Collegiate Academy, she will benefit from a school that is small enough to see her and make her feel like she belongs- that is important to us," said an interested Becoming family.
North Jacksonville's families have expressed enthusiasm for the tuition-free option that is uniquely positioned to mirror the experience of Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs). “I walked on the campus of Spelman College and Morehouse University in Atlanta, Ga and instantly asked myself- why is it that our K-12 schools do not feel like this?,” said Becoming Collegiate Academy’s Founder and Principal, Cameron Frazier. Becoming Collegiate Academy was designed to create an experience that replicates the identity-shaping culture HBCU’S provide by replicating the supportive, nurturing, and self-empowering environment needed for students to develop and affirm their cultural and academic identities. Cameron has labored to write a successful charter application, which was recently approved by Duval County Public Schools in Oct of 2020. A proud product of Duval County Public Schools and graduate of Jacksonville, Florida, Cameron seeks to provide students in North Jacksonville with an educational experience that he lacked access to- one that is focused on preparing all students for college. At Becoming Collegiate Academy, college is the expectation for every student, starting as early as kindergarten. Becoming is excited to offer an option that is designed to immerse students in a safe, supportive, and intellectually rigorous environment that connects with the history of their community, contributes to the healing of societal wounds, and inspires them to translate their community’s relentless spirit into academic success.
